About Queen Emily
Heya. I have decided to update my page once again, in the hopes of being even less interesting:
I am a trans woman. etc.

Hey there,
If this is the same Queen Emily who wrote the post “Why I Hate Filling Out Forms” over at Feministe, I wanted to say thank you for it. I realize it was forever ago in blogosphere time, but I came across it while looking for teaching materials and it really helped me out. I used it for an Intro to Sociology class I’m teaching, during a unit on research methods. I was trying to show the students that responsible researchers need to think about the impact of how they operationalize variables, because the variable might be totally academic to one person and life or death to someone else. A lot of my students are nursing majors, so I’ve been trying to include readings that are relevant to their other classwork and that will remind them that people outside the gender binary are human beings and deserve respectful medical care. The students really seemed to like the piece and to get the point of the lecture. So again, thanks!

Hi Nena,
I am indeed she. I’m really pleased that you’ve set the piece to be read by nursing majors, that’s awesome. Just introducing them to the idea that trans people’s identities need to be respected as we understand them is important :)
I did write a response here to some of the criticisms I received about that post which you may find interesting (though possibly not classroom ready!):
