Baltimore Sun: Target of McDonald’s beating speaks out

with 6 comments

Story here:

A transgender woman brutally beaten at a Baltimore CountyMcDonald’s spoke out on Saturday, saying that the attack was “definitely a hate crime” and that she’s been afraid to leave the house ever since.

“They said, ‘That’s a dude, that’s a dude and she’s in the female bathroom,’” said Chrissy Lee Polis, who’s 22 and said she stopped at the Rosedale restaurant to use the restroom. “They spit in my face.”

A worker at the restaurant taped Monday’s attack and created a graphic video that eventually went viral on Friday. After the video garnered hundreds of thousands of views on websites, McDonald’s issued a statement condemning the incident and on Saturday, fired the worker that taped it.

The video shows two women — one of them a 14-year-old girl — repeatedly kicking and punching Polis in the head as an employee and a patron try to intervene. Others can be heard laughing, and men are seen standing idly by.

More at the link.

What I said in the previous post holds true: No racism, no concern trolling about trans women using women’s restrooms.
Update: CBS has more.

Outreach groups for the transgendered community are planning a rally in front of the Rosedale McDonald’s for Monday night at 7 p.m., hoping to send the message that what happened inside is unacceptable.

More information:

Rosedale McDonald’s address is 6315 Kenwood Ave in Baltimore. Their phone number is 410-866-3250.

  1. I’ll note that (by her account), even when they were misgendering her in the buildup to the attack, they got her pronoun right. If she’s recounting that aspect accurately (instead of, say, softening it to manage her pain), it really puts the lie to the idea that people misgender/mis-pronoun trans people because it’s easier.

Fixating on the tiny details here because the whole thing is so terrifying.

  3. Hideous, hideous, hideous. And that doesn’t even come close to describing this. I’m not sure there are any words that can.

  5. Of all the horribleness of this I am hopeful that the attention it is getting will really be helpful in changing opinions.
