Questioning Transphobia

Monday Open Post, Unwanted Ad Free Edition

First, some links:

Samia writes I actually call it cisfail sometimes.

Restructure! writes Male geeks reclaim masculinity at the expense of female geeks.

Before I get to the music video, please remember to update your RSS feeds and links, etc to http://www.questioningtransphobia.com. The old site will no longer be updated, but will remain online for archival purposes. Things are a bit messy here and now, as I’m still getting things organized. Most of it is functional now, at least.

Tori Amos’ Cornflake Girl. The video has some elements from the Wizard of Oz (tornado part) but otherwise seems pretty random.

  1. [...] Today’s open post is here. [...]

  2. Go Samia! I love her blog.

Now on to the Shameless Self Promoting.

And, lessee, this week I read through the trans job discrimination study Queen Emily mentioned earlier this week, and wrote up a tidy summary of how the experiment worked and what exactly it found.

And then I was mean to a particularly callous libertarian and shared a periodic table of profanity that made me especially happy.

  3. Tinamou I’m glad you’ve linked to your blog! More interesting stuff to read–always good.
This is hardly big news, but I experimented today with going to the post office without binding. It went fine. I’m sure my build helps, but if I can do this a few days a week during the summer, it will really help out my back.

  4. ::opens door, looks around, tentatively steps inside::

I think I like it in here. Including the ad-free decor.

  5. I will admit that I am looking at advertising possibilities because I am very broke and do need the money, but I will be pretty careful about how this happens.

  6. I never was a “never was a cornflake girl,” myself.

    Welcome to the new digs.

  7. In that case, revise the last sentence to “Including the transphobia-and-chasing-free advertising.”

  8. Hey, new gaff, lovin it :)

Over in my small corner of the internet, I posted about the feeling of exile, being an immigrant in Ireland. I casually mention the terror of revealing my trans-ness to people I meet of the country I’m from. But don’t go much into that, it’s mostly about alienation regarding being a foreigner.

  9. Being a geek myself, I find the restructure article to be highly, highly disturbing. I never considered the idea of ‘geek’ to be of a single gender for years before I admitted to myself I’m transgender.

Any of the guys who seek to claim that you have to be male to be a geek, suck it up and get comfortable with who you are, period. Don’t try to rationalize it into an artificial gender role.

  10. Like the new site – might get one myself…

    Wishing you every success.

  12. Nice digs — have a great housewarming.

Only niggly point I noticed is user logins don’t carry across: not a big deal.

  13. There’s no way for that to work out, unfortunately. The new site has its own user accounts.

There are ways to transfer some accounts across, but they involve you having posts on the blog in the first place.

  16. Oh shoot. I’ve linked to y’all a lot. I’m gonna have to change a mess of links in my posts. XD

  17. One of the things I think is interesting is that even though Restructure! focuses on the geek, I would say the nerd (a word which better fits the “media consumption” model) is equally exclusive, through there’s less science and more societal standards-based gender bias to back up the argument.

It’s also a model that allows for masculinity that’s achievable by non-traditional means (reading, knowledge, behavioral codes), which is why I’m not exactly surprised to see lots of trans men heavily into fandom(s) now coming out.

Also, self-pimping: Trans men? On my television? Madness!

  18. Off topic, but this Skip the Makeup post is about the Nikki Araguz case in Houston, TX, where a trans woman who is the widow of a firefighter who recently died in the line of duty is facing a challenge to receiving her survivor’s benefits by the firefighter’s ex-wife and his mother.

This is a major case which is being handled by Phyllis Frye, one of the most important attorneys responsible for establishing legal precedents for trans people and the lawyer who represented Christie Lee Littleton.
